Politics is HARD.
At times, it’s incredibly rewarding, stressful, life-changing, and yes, even fun. But today was tough—one of the harder days I’ve had on the Mississippi House floor. We voted on a bill that’s been on our radar for weeks. I was a "No" vote on this bill.
But representation isn’t always clear-cut. There’s no perfect road map for representing 25,000 people, and every vote requires tough judgment calls.
What made today even harder was how close I came to voting yes, largely because of the hard work of one of the representatives I respect most, Jonathan McMillan. He poured hours into improving this bill, working with superintendents and others to make it significantly better. The version that passed today is better because of his efforts, without question.
What people often don’t see is the behind-the-scenes work that goes into legislation. Johnathan took the lead within our group on this bill and gave it everything he had. While he may not be getting the credit he deserves and is even facing some criticism on social media, I want to publicly acknowledge his leadership, dedication, and hard work.
This post isn’t about the bill itself—it’s about the reality of politics. It’s tough, messy, emotional, and full of judgment calls. But it’s also about the people who put their hearts into making things better, even when it’s hard.
